Tunesday 29th July, 2014: Daft Punk - Pentatonix

We’ve covered Pentatonix on Tunesday before, but our crime (in my opinion) is not introducing you, should you not have already gone off and found it yourself, to this Daft Punk medley – the main attraction from their second album released towards the end of last year. I say this because I only recently discovered it myself, and wondered how it had escaped my grasp until now. As of last month, this video had over 75 million views on YouTube.

A song doesn’t get that many clicks just by having a colourful video, as this one certainly does. It needs other elements, such as great editing. Nice vocals. Good-looking group members. In Pentatonix’ case, every cover they’ve done shows off their charisma, creativity and an almost telepathic connection that allows them to work in tandem unlike any group I’ve ever seen before.

You may think that’s overblown hype generated by those well-edited videos, but you’ll only think that until you see or hear them live. It is at that point, when you realise they look and sound exactly like they do in every one of their videos, if not better, that you would realise the hype that has surrounded this group for the past couple of years, is completely deserved. They are for real, and this is one entertaining piece of music.
